Fresh Produce Packaged Right!
Packaging fresh produce, including packaged fruits and vegetables, when done right, increases the shelf life of your produce. Your challenge as a quality professional and technical expert in the Produce Packaging Industry are many. In the packaging process, you need to have a modified atmosphere package (MAP) to ensure a long shelf life. But for fresh produce, this MAP needs to work in conjunction with special “permeable” packaging materials, because fruits and vegetables continue to “breathe” or respire after they have been packaged. Thus, your package needs to achieve an equilibrium modified atmosphere (EMA), where a constant level of CO2 is maintained in the package; but O2 is allowed to be consumed by the produce. Packaging produce is complex and there is a lot to control in your packaging to ensure your produce meets your shelf life expectations.
At AMETEK MOCON, we our experts in modified atmosphere packaging QA/QC and breathable barrier film testing and have pioneered a variety of MAP package testing tools to ensure your produce package works. Our Gas Mixers and Online MAP Gas Analyzers are used to control and monitor the gas composition needed for your produce. Our Headspace Gas Analyzers provide the quality control you need to confidently ship your products to market. In addition, our oxygen permeation analyzers for high transmitting, breathable films (OX-TRAN 2/12-T, with T-Mod Coulox Sensor), was designed in close collaboration with the packaged produce industry to ensure your breathable films are quality controlled. From MAP QA to MAP and package QC, we have the testing equipment for packaged produce.
