MARKET TRENDS

Blister Packaging Expands Performance in Pharmaceutical Industry

The market size for blister packaging is expected to grow at an average CAGR of 7.2% through at least 2027--primarily in industries such as healthcare, food, consumer goods, and industrial goods. Healthcare is by far the largest segment with nearly 70% of the blister packaging demand. This consistent growth stems from the cost-effectiveness of the packaging itself and the growing need for tamper-proof design in all package types.

Most blister packaging has two components: the blister cavities and the lidding or film. Typically, these are made from two different materials—which makes it difficult to recycle the single package together. In order to address this issue and improve the blister pack recycling process, several companies are working to create both components from the same material. For example, KP Films, a major player in sustainable packaging solutions, is working on innovation that is responsible and recyclable, namely a solution using PET for both the blister cavity and lidding. This single-material solution along with improvements to improve barrier properties are the biggest trends in the blister packaging market.

NEW TECHNOLOGY & PRODUCTS

21 CFR Part 11 Compliant Software

Specifically for our healthcare customers, we offer the 21 CFR Part 11 option on all MOCON Next Generation Permeation Analyzers. For a modest cost, this capability is added to our standard WinPerm 2 operation system, which meets the enhanced requirements for data security, audit trails, and user management—making FDA audits and inspections easy and hassle-free.

LATEST APPLICATIONS & TRENDS

MOCON Solutions for Easier Permeation Testing for Blister Packages

Responding to the increased demand for blister package testing, MOCON recently launched two new test cartridges to simplify your testing process:

  • Empty Blister Test Cartridge for OTR and WVTR testing

  • Prefilled Blister Test Cartridge for pre-filled blister sample’s WVTR testing

Empty Blister Test Cartridge Applications:

During the blister packaging production process, engineers will check for both barrier level changes and examine seal integrity between the cavity and lidding. Blister cavity or the cavity/lidding combo can be tested for OTR and/or WVTR with a special Blister Cartridge designed for empty blister samples. With the specially designed cartridge and mask setup, testing empty blister samples is easy. The Empty Blister Test Cartridge works with any of our MOCON Next Generation Film Analyzers, e.g., OX-TRAN 2/22, OX-TRAN 2/12, PERMATRAN-W 3/34, AQUATRAN 3, etc.

Prefilled Blister Test Cartridge Applications:

Prefilled and sealed blister samples are prepared by manufacturers according to their production specifications. By determining the prefilled blister sample WVTR, one can evaluate the moisture barrier level of the blister materials, as well as the potential leakage from the blister seal. This serves as a quality check to ensure the integrity of the final blister package. With the use of the Prefilled Blister Cartridge, WVTR testing is convenient and easy, with faster turn-around vs. the traditional gravimetric method. High repeatability and accuracy are achieved with our TruSeal design in the Cartridge, in conjunction with MOCON's Next Generation Film Analyzers PERMATRAN-W 3/34 and AQUATRAN 3:
